Here are some images from our ever so slightly epic walk between the Slovak huts in August 2010.  We anticipated a nice challenging walk between several mountain huts (Chata Pri Zelenom Plese – Teryho Chata – Zbojnicka Chata) in indian summer type weather. Needless to say it didn’t quite work out like that.   The walk up to Chata Pri Zelenom Plese was quite pleasant, if a little on the cool side.

The beginning of our 'wintry' summer walk!

We arrived at Chata Pri Zelenom Plese in … well … not very nice weather.  This was taste of things to come!

The following day dawned nice and clear and we thought that we were in for several days of nice settled weather.  We didn’t realise how wrong we were.

The view as we walked over the col on the 2nd day

The weather seemed to be holding but as we reached the long climb from C-P-Z-P it got ominously cloudy and wet.

Moody mountains!

We quite thankfully arrived at Teryho Chata in wet and windy weather.  The warmth and security inside were more than welcome.

Teryho Chata - out of the rain and snow.

The next day the weather had worsened and we decided over the col was not really an option so down and up the next valley seemed sensible.  By this time we realised the weather was not particularly summery but surely it couldn’t get much colder or worse.  It was of course only August – WRONG!!  The weather got progressively colder and more unseasonal as we trekked up to Zbojnicka Chata.

Louise looking surprisingly cheerful (concerned!!??) on the way to Zbojnicka.

When we arrived at Zbojnicka the weather had turned to be very wintry and little did we know at the time but it was a major storm.  The hut itself was a superb haven of comfort whilst the weather got increasingly worse outside. The only slight downside was that the toilets were also outside.  We did have some exciting loo trips – enough said!  The following day was far too bad to venture down so we sat tight – minus 4degC and 70 mph winds!!

August 2010 - Zbojnicka Chata

A day holed up meant some improvisation for amusement.

I think you will find that's my book your reading

Yum - goulash!!

Intense gaming!

The day after the weather had subsided slightly so we decided that we should head down.  However the weather was far from summer!

Stu with frozen lake

Thankfully the weather improved massively as we descended and it became quite hot toward the foot of the mountains.  A few weeks later I learned that this was a truly horrendous storm and very unseasonal – quite soberingly some others got caught out and were not quite as fortunate as we were.  On a more cheerful note – the mountains looked lovely in their new covering of snow.

Rainerova chata on the way down

Lovely inside

The rest of the trip was slightly less epic.  Even the bus arrived on time.  We had a very niece evening meeting up with Milan and Katka in Liptovsky-Hradok and then all too quickly back to Bratislava for the flight back. All in all – a super holiday!!

  4. It was such a great trip. Its really good to see some of your pictures – mine seem to have missed out the snow (how?). I would love to go back and do the high level via ferrata routes between the huts. Perhaps one none freaky August – Sarah x x x
